Source ...Settle down kids, skincare class in in session
I have covered many a skincare brand and product here on Krasey Beauty, and have even gone so far as to explain the science behind some of the hot topic ingredients that are out on the market today, present in my lotions, potions, and various shmears. You may not have noticed, but I haven't really gone ahead to delve into the topic of skincare tips, since I couldn't speak on the subject with the air of authority only a professional would have. Well folks, I have found my skincare professional, one who has imparted upon me and several others a wealth of dermal discernment. Not one to hog all of a good thing to myself, I want to share with you nuggets of skincare gold, all courtesy of Dr Schultz of DermTV.
I recently had the opportunity to attend a skincare presentation with the good doctor, who is a New York-based, cosmetic dermatologist with a Park Avenue practice and thirty years of experience in the industry that make him a veritable expert. Not only is Dr Schultz a major skincare authority with a thriving practice, but he is also the charming personality and brains behind DermTV- a website that establishes itself as THE skincare information resource on the web.
DermTV is a virtual library of short videos, posted every other day, and hosted by Dr Schultz himself. The videos cover anything and everything under the sun and to the sun in the world of skincare, presenting information in a clear and engaging way. No matter what your question or concern is, there is most likely a video that addresses it; and if not, there will be! Touching upon some of the topics covered in his videos during the presentation, I became especially excited when Dr Schultz turned the conversation over to his five golden rules of skincare. Of course I must share these with all of you, so here they are: Five invaluable tips to achieve optimal skin appearance and health:
1. For optimal beauty and health, you need to incorporate the following products into your skincare routine every single day:
- Antioxidant-enriched serum to combat cancer causing free radicals
- An Exfoliant to eliminate rough texture from the skin
- An SPF product to protect against the harmful rays of the sun
2. You must use sunscreen 7 days a week, 365 days a year, reapplied during prolonged exposure. If you can see your hand in front of you, then there is enough light to hurt your skin. The sunscreen must also have protection against skin-damaging UVA rays.
3. Layer skincare products properly, always put the thinnest, least viscous product on first, to ensure that it is properly absorbed into the skin. The one exception to the rule is sunscreen, as that must always be applied first during the day.
4. Know your 'oil and water' skin type (dry, combination, etc), and then utilize products formulated for that skin type. Using the wrong kind of products will have detrimental effects.
5. The time to treat sun damage and begin anti-aging skincare regimens is in your 20's, before wrinkles become visible.
Other bits I learned:
- With exfoliants, both chemical and granular will do the trick. For added precision and control in the level of exfoliants, or for sensitive skin, stick with chemical.
- A product with an SPF of 15 provides 88% sun protection in the lab, about 78% in real life. An SPF of 30 provides 95% protection in the lab, and 85% in real life.
- Do not, under any circumstances mix your moisturizer with an spf, as that will render the spf completely ineffective.
There are plenty more tips that I picked up, but I will save those for another time. I suddenly find myself in a state of skincare enlightenment, and it is all thanks to the good doctor. Stay tuned for more of my adventures in skincare, and check out DermTV for more tips. You will definitely be glad you did.
