Shopping for the Cause- Children's Aid Society's Miracle on Madison

Every now and then, an announcement for a great cause happens to find its way into my inbox. That was the case today, with an email I received about a shopping event called 'Miracle on Madison', sponsored by the Children's Aid Society.

This holiday season, we all want to treat ourselves to something special -- maybe some new jewelry, a chic pair of shoes or that "must-have" toy for the kids...

But what if your wishes could make a REAL difference, not just in your own home, but in the lives of children who need a lot more than just a new toy?  If you had that kind of magic at your fingertips... what would YOU wish for?

Well, now you do.

Join us for the Miracle on Madison, a shopping extravaganza, on December 6, 2009 from 12-5 pm to fulfill your wish list and ours.  The Children’s Aid Society will receive 20% of the day's proceeds from all participating stores, and that money will provide vital health services to the under-served children in NYC!

Plus, before December 6, visit our blog on the Miracle on Madison page and let us know what your REAL holiday wish list would look like (http://blogs.childrensaidsociety.org/childrensaid/miracle-madison/),

Because we all love new shoes, sweaters, games and toys -- but some wishes on our list can't fit in a gift box.

This holiday season, help your gifts go just a little farther. Save the Date and Save a Child.

I do hope my fellow New Yorkers will try to make it out there, and shop for a great cause. :)

Fashion's Night Out- The Game Plan

As some of you may have heard, Fashion's Night Out is an event where all who are in town for Mercedes Benz Fashion Week come out and play. Stores are open until 11pm, and special events occur at retail venues all over New York City. It is a chance to see, do, and shop till you drop.

While navigating the endless list of events can get overwhelming, I have chosen a couple of key locations to hit up on my tour. Here are the spots that I plan on attending. Barneys and Saks descriptions taken from the Fashion's Night Out official website.

Barney's- "On September 10, Barneys New York at Madison and Sixty-first will be transformed into a street fair of designer personal appearances and creative events. Customers will have the opportunity to shop and mingle with Isabel Toledo, Marcus and David from Rag & Bone, Narciso Rodriguez, Amanda Brooks, Waris, Thom Browne, Jonathan Adler, Lisa Perry, Alexander Wang, the Row’s Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, and many more. In addition to the personal appearances, Barneys will stage a roster of happenings. Wool and the Gang will teach knitting; Lipstick Queen Poppy King will offer “lip readings”; Vogue editor Tonne Goodman will curate a fashion green market; Gianluca Isaia will offer Neapolitan delicacies; Adam Kimmel will show a Gerard Malanga video installation; Loomstate will customize T-shirts; Leonid Khankin will host an Ernst Benz watch trunk show; Alabama Chanin will host a sewing circle; Juan Carlos Obando will give salsa lessons."

Saks Fifth Avenue- "Saks Fifth Avenue is excited to participate in the first ever "Fashion’s Night Out." HIGHLIGHTS: Saks will transform its New York Flagship into the evening’s hottest spot, complete with a red carpet and stantions leading the way to the store’s entrances on Fifth Avenue. Many of Saks’s celebrated designers will make personal appearances that evening including Donna Karan— who will inaugurate her new in store shop at 5 p.m. as a kick-off to the evening— Carolina Hererra, Elie Tahari Giuseppe Zanotti, Josie Natori, Peter Som, Ralph Rucci, Geren Ford, Shoshanna Gruss, Kay Unger, the designers of jewelry line Faraone Mennella and many more. The biggest names in beauty such as Aerin Lauder, Bobbi Brown and Fredrick Fekkai will also visit Saks, along with world renowned makeup and beauty artists representing the foremost beauty brands. Customers can look forward to over 1,000 cosmetic giveaways."

Scoop NYC with the gals of Purple Lab, Cupcakes by Cupcake Republic, and Veronica Varlow
My love for Purple Lab knows no bounds, and it is also no secret that I absolutely look up to founder Karen Robinovitz. That being said, it is only natural that I would want to stop by Scoop NYC to spend some time with the Purple Labbers, Karen, and the stunning Miss Veronica Varlow. With cupcakes, lipgloss, and lychee martinis- a total match made in heaven.

Will you be attending Fashion's Night Out? If so, which venues do you plan on hitting up?

Dare to be Bare, Naturally. Uni.K.Wax Salon.

Hair removal, whether it be achieved by epilating, waxing, electrolysis, or shaving can be very tricky business indeed. We all look for ways to keep ourselves looking sleek and smooth, but don't always get the results we want.

Since adolescence, my hair removal method of choice was shaving. Having tried epilating, depilatories, and at home waxing to no avail, I found myself stuck with a razor blade thinking it was the only painless and (somewhat) effective hair removal tool. With hair that is both coarse and dark, I became a slave to my razor blade. Skipping even a day would leave me with a dreaded 5 o'clock shadow, making me feel like I was doomed to roam the Earth hairy and miserable. Not pretty folks, not pretty at all.

I have never ventured into the realm of salon waxing beyond brow shapings, only because I was afraid of the pain and the possibility of irritation. We all saw the infamous scene in 40 yr old Virgin, where poor Steve Carell had both his man fur and his pride ripped right out of him. I definitely did not want to experience the female equivalent.

Cue Uni.K.Wax, an up-and-coming waxing studio right in the heart of NYC's midtown. Uni.K.Wax was founded in 1993, in South Beach, by Argentinean Noemi Grupenmager. The Uni.K.Wax Center philosophy is that they are devoted to the art of practically painless and safe hair removal in a clean and comfortable environment. They use an innovative natural, herbal wax that completely removes hair without the use of paper strips.

I arrived at Uni.K.Wax, and was immediately impressed by the space's cleanliness and simple aesthetic. I was given the tour by the manager, who showed me the lab where the wax is made-to-order for each customer at the beginning of his/her appointment. Each customer gets their own warming tub filled with just the right amount of wax for their purposes. After use, the excess is dumped and the warming tub is sterilized. The whole process ensures sterility and eliminates wastefulness. Thoroughly impressed with their procedures, I felt that my appointment was off to a great start.

I then sat down with my technician Tabitha (Tabi for short), in a small private room. We discussed what I wanted done, and how we were going to go about achieving my desired results. I expressed my concerns over it being my first time, and she reassured me that she would make it as quick and painless as possible. She also explained that the special wax that is used minimizes irritation and is not only all-natural with ingredients like pine sap, beeswax, and aloe vera, but is also skin friendly and possesses a natural elasticity that ensures it won't pull the skin.

Tabitha expertly painted on the dark green wax, fanning it for a minute before it dried to a semi hardened state. With one quick yank, the hair was gone. Despite the fact that my hair rather likes to stay in the follicle, I was pleased to find that it came out rather easily and relatively painlessly. Of course there was slight pain on the pull, but it was fleeting. The whole thing was over in less than 15 minutes, and I found myself pleasantly surprised with not only the results, but the lack of pain and irritation at the end of the process.

I am so thrilled with my first salon waxing experience, and with Uni.K.Wax Center in particular, that I just might never touch my dreaded razor again. I highly recommend it! Uni.K offers a full range of services for both men and women, at super affordable prices. They have several locations and rumor has it that Beyonce and Cameron Diaz are both fans.

Give Uni.K.Wax a try, I know I am glad that I did. You can find your closest location by visiting the site here.
